I grew up in Mount Ayr; at college-age, in an attempt to jerk someone’s chain, I told him my hometown was the site of Iowa’s only volcano.

He believed me.

Just didn’t want you to think you were the only one w/ a volcanic neighborhood.

The highlight of the trip to Hawai’i, for me was seeing the REAL volcano (but no real lava).

Maybe it’s supposed to give us insight into who this Amber character is. Maybe since she doesn’t speak Spanish, she mispronounces the word “Español”–and other Spanish words–a lot.

Nah. It’s probably just a typo.

Ai! If they had started using smaller napkins and this slogan was meant to let customers know that there was less napkin, it would have been fine. That’s how I read it, at first. But fewer definitely makes more sense, in this sentence.

I got 4 out of 10 as well. Most of them were educated guesses. My second choices on a lot of the others was the right answer…

I got 9 out of 10. Some of the etymologies are wrong (as are some of entries in the Online Etymology Dictionary). “bistro” is not from the Russian for “quick”. On the other hand, the wrong etymologies tend to get removed or corrected.

I got some of them wrong because I was going for word *origin,* when the question was about “what does it mean.”

Flibbertigibbet, is the one I’m thinking of. The question was, what does it mean. I thought they meant, what did it FIRST mean, so I guessed the “underwater lure” answer.

(though it looks as though that’s the etymology anyway–flebergebet in ME, which apparently meant the same thing then)

Don’t feel bad, MRP. I only got four right, too. (And I only really KNEW two of them. The other two were shots in the dark.) That game is almost as infuriating as those golf-tees-in-the-wooden-triangle puzzles they have at Cracker Barrel restaurants.
