Flush out vs flesh out

Thanks to Raquel, who read this memo from the Boss:

I also hope that we can continue working to flush out the communications strategy for the campaign.

And asked:

Is it really? Or is the expression supposed to be flesh out?

According to one of MRP’s favorite sources, Brians’ Common Errors in English, the answer in this case is flesh out, which has to do with giving an idea substance. Flushing out has something to do with hunting.

To which Raquel responded, and MRP heartily concurs: “I like the idea of the Boss wearing an Elmer Fudd hat and roaming around his office trying to flush out that pesky varmint, a campaign strategy.”

  1. I would love to see a Photoshop of the Boss on Elmer Fudd’s body. He does look quite silly in his bike helmet so I can imagine what he would look like in Fudd’s hat.

  2. Annual report? “What makes our stool unique is how we flush it out.”
