This just in: La mama de MRP reads the blog. Her review? “It’s a cross between Arthur Schlesinger and Erma Bombeck.” (May they both rest in peace.)

Schlesinger may seem like a natural comparison to my readers, but it may surprise you to hear that the folksy humor of Erma Bombeck was quite inspiring in my formative years. As a mighty red crayon, I thought the title of her book, “If Life is Like a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?” was hilarious.

Her observations are timeless. To wit, “My theory on housework is, if the item doesn’t multiply, smell, catch fire, or block the refrigerator door, let it be. No one else cares. Why should you?

Words to live by, my friends. Words to live by.

  2. Well, as dear Erma said, “Before you try to keep up with the Joneses, be sure they’re not trying to keep up with you.”

  3. My 6th-grade teacher wouldn’t let me do a book report of a Bombeck book because those books were “for girls.” I’m still trying to recover.

  4. Funny, I always thought your writing was more inspired by another Arthur…Bea Arthur.
