Oh where, oh where, did my apostrophe go?

This sign is behind Bruno’s Barbership, but MRP sees this exact same mistake in many places (there are two on signs right behind my new office building, in fact, which I pass every morning on my way to work). Okay, here’s the deal: should be owner’s not owners.

  1. Applause.
I think I’ve seen only two or three correct versions of that sign in my life. One other nettlesome ambiguity — which owner, that of the vehicle or that of the property?

  2. Hm, I’ve never found it very ambiguous myself, only because it doesn’t refer to the property anywhere, only the vehicle. Also . . . nettlesome?

  3. Nettlesome nettles you? No offense intended, MRP. I’m working on Flanderizing my vocabulary as the wee one’s ears develop.

Back to the point at hand, I’m planning on starting a practice that will sue property owners and towing companies for reimbursement of towing fees based on my correct interpretation of those signs. It’s a free-diddly-tow, darn it.

  4. I agree with Helen’s Dad. In fact when I was a kid I thought it meant the property owner would pay the tow fees. I was a kid what did I know about towing procedures.

  5. Maybe you were right, Helen’s Dad, it is a nettlesome question 🙂

  6. This sign makes it almost sound like the business name is Owners Expense. As in, “All other cars will be towed at Owners Expense!” Note to self: don’t park in the lot of your local Owners Expense, or it might be a while before you see your car again. 😉

  7. “All other cars will be towed at Owners Expense!”

Where is Owners Expense? Do they tow to there or from that point?
