Airways versus airwaves

Filed under: Overseen,Word wars — mighty red pen @ 6:26 pm

This came across MRP’s desk this week. The subject of the piece was radio broadcasting and this was the headline:

“Keeping the Airways Open”

It took me a minute to figure out what was wrong with it, but here’s the deal. This would be a headline for a story about, say, tracheotomies or the Heimlich manuever, but in a story about radios, the preferred term would be airwaves.
