Appetizing appetizers

Saw this invitation today:

Which immediately caught MRP’s eye because of this unfortunate situation:

I’m going to guess that LPN Logo is not their actual logo . . . but don’t stop there. Then there was this:

Gratuitous capitalization of the o in d’oeuvres aside, here’s the deal: hors d’oeuvres are appetizers, so it’s totally redundant to say appetizing hors d’oeuvres.

Unless the appetizers are KFC fried chicken delivered by FedEx express to your reception at DSW Shoes.

  1. Well, it IS possible that the hors d’oeuvres would not be particularly appetizing (as many of us surely have experienced at office parties and weddings, etc.), so maybe they’re emphasizing that THESE are, in fact, tasty…. Yumm.

  2. Appetizing hors d’oeuvres… Are you sure this was an LPN meeting and not a meeting run by the Department of Redundancy Department?

  3. As a French and hopeful linguistic major, that makes my eyes burn. Hors d’oeuvres is in the top ten of my favorite French words, and to see that makes me cringe.
