Words on parade

Filed under: Wordsworthy — mighty red pen @ 2:21 pm

The Word of the Year parade rolls on, this time with the American Dialect Society chiming in with the mortgage-related term subprime.

As for “subprime,” [spokesman Wayne] Glowka said it is an odd word – at least as far as linguists are concerned.

The prefix “sub” translates roughly to “below the standard,” while “prime” means something close to “the best.”

So, according to Glowka, the word really means “far below the best.”

Yeah, okay, that’s interesting, although I have to say I found the word they named “most creative” as way more intriguing: Googleganger. It means the other person that comes up when you Google yourself.

Not that we, um, don’t have anything better to do with our time than to sit here cyberstalking ourselves . . .

  1. So Sub Prime has no chance against Optimus Prime?

p.s. Molie’s got a million Googlegangers! I know them all!

  2. No, I think it’s the other way around. Subprime won.
