An apostrophic feast

Filed under: Apostrophe catastrophe,Perilous punctuation — mighty red pen @ 7:49 pm

Hat tip to Sha for what’s surely a first for MRP: An apostrophe catastrophe from the great state of West Virginia.

Sha writes, “This is a menu cover from my favorite pizza place in South Charleston, West Virginia. Don’t know why they got wings right but screwed up on the others!”

They are extra apostrophes, to be sure, but why even put in the extra s in the first place when pizza, salad, and pasta would have done just as nicely?

  1. Maybe the apostrophe’s are homage’s to Gino’s! Okay, stopping now.

  2. Poor, poor, West Virginia. We always get bad press. Not that I’m blaming you, MRP and Sha — not at all. That menu is hidz. But, still, I wish West Virginia could get some good press for once. Oh, wait, I think maybe I just thought of something: Our governor changed our welcome-to-the-state signs to say “Open for Business” a few years back. Everyone — and I mean EVERYONE — hated it, so now they’ve been changed back to “Wild, Wonderful.”

Except, according to this “USA Today” story about the change, there’s no comma between “Wild” and “Wonderful”: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/news/2007-09-18-wva-slogan_N.htm

So even THAT’s effed up. Jesus.

The next time I pass into the state, I’m going to check out the “Wild[,] Wonderful” sign and see if it really is missing a comma. That would suck.

  3. All the “Welcome to West Virginia” signs that I can find on The Google that have wild and wonderful on them say “Wild and Wonderful.”

Someone, run to West Virginia, quickly, and report back.

  4. The sad thing is, I LIVE here, and I don’t even remember.

  5. I hope to travel back to the great state of my birth this June and will be sure to stop at the state line to photograph the sign welcoming me into Wild, Wonderful West Virginia to settle this debate.
