This cartoon by Rob Tornoe made me laugh. But I have to say, it’s my sense that it’s not just out-of-work copy editors that act like this.

  1. Too few people know this; even fewer know that effect IS a verb. It’s just not a verb in the way that most folks tend to misuse it.

  2. Very cute! This reminds me of a cartoon I saw in a book of doctor jokes. The doctor told the patient, “Your colon looks perfectly healthy, but what I’m really concerned about are your dangling participles.”

  3. Aren’t “effect” and “affect” homophonous. That guy must be magic, if he can read the kid’s mind to know which word he means.
